Misconstrued equality excoriates the Oscars. Everyone thinks to have an equal number of apples, oranges, pears, peaches, strawberries, grapes, bananas, or Oscars means equality.
You're probably wondering where I am going with this; the Oscars have come and gone. The big ruckus about not having any African-Americans nominated for this year’s awards shadowed the Thespian achievement. I know talent is subjective but is there so much mistrust in the film world that the nominees who are chosen can no longer feel happy about their nominations because of the race card?
Are we now at the point where we divide the Oscars according to ethnicity i.e. two Oscars for Caucasians, two Oscars for African-Americans, and maybe two Oscars for Hispanics? We have become foolish and disillusioned if we think that a multicultural society means equal distribution; that is communism or socialism.
Anytime we attempt to regulate Animal Farm is born. Achievement slips into mediocrity.
Taking a look at the sports world in the United States, I believe Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Mohammed Ali, and Michael Jordan became Most Valuable Players not because they were African- Americans but because they were simply the best sportsmen in their sports.
Toni Morrison, Nikki Hardy, Alice Walker, and Whoopi Goldberg have achieved Pulitzers, National Book Awards, and Oscars not because they were black but again because they were commendable, praiseworthy, and just downright outstanding. They were the best, and no one could overlook them. So, what are we saying now?
Is it possible to keep the Oscars free of the sickness that is drowning our society and the craziness that raises mediocrity to its highest level of achievement for the sake of supposed diversity?
